 2023 Preview 


       James Clemens completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year James Clemens just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region four with a 4-3 region record.

       James Clemens took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017. The Jets hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just four games which followed a 10-1 record in 2021.

      

       James Clemens is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eleven seasons. They have managed a record of 68-52 over the past eleven years.

       Over the past 11 seasons, James Clemens has managed to compile a record of 68-52. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 7A and 110th in the AHSAA.




       The Jets are led by head coach Chad McGehee who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-7 over the past two seasons at James Clemens. Under his direction the Jets have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach McGehee. Over the course of his career, Coach McGehee's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time and won one region championship. The Jets have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 67-48 last season. That ranks 8th in Class 7A and 34th in the AHSAA.

       The Jets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. James Clemens came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

      Receiver Ty Doughty will return after grabbing 53 passes good for 772 yards as a sophomore last season.

       The Jets open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Gardendale on Friday, August 25 at Driver Stadium. Last year the Gardendale Rockets finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in first place in Class 6A region five. The Rockets lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Muscle Shoals by a score of 38-7.

       James Clemens and Gardendale have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Jets have a 2-2-0 record against the Rockets. They last met in 2022 with Gardendale winning by a score of 41-34.

       James Clemens lost 7A All-State  athlete Giovanni Lopez to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive back Jamal Mayers.

       The Jets return 7A All-State Junior athlete Ty Doughty. He was named to the second team last season.
